the middle ones – badges

Posted in illustrations, music, news by tom humberstone on June 20th, 2010

Having seen my comic from the other week, WIAIWYA Records asked if they could use the drawing I had made of Anna from The Middle Ones as a badge. They also I asked if I would fancy drawing Grace in the same style for another badge.

Here’s what I sent them:

If the designs end up being used, I’ll let you know how to get hold of the badges should you like these at all. The Middle Ones are a very charming, twee, lo-fi indie duo. Delightful. If you’re a fan of that sort of thing. I don’t think it’s much of a secret that I am.

hype machine illustration – iron & wine

Posted in illustrations, music, news by tom humberstone on January 4th, 2010

This week sees Hype Machine’s 2009 overview going online – focusing on 50 artists chosen by users of the site. This year, they decided to have each artist/band accompanied by an illustration. They got in touch with me and asked if I’d like to provide an illustration for one of the artists and I chose – from the ten or so remaining – to go for Iron & Wine.

As Sheret commented to me once – Iron & Wine is the musical choice for men who want to cry late at night.

Here’s the illustration I provided:

I drew it fairly quickly during the festive period and only looked at it again today when it went online. Obviously, now all I see are the things I should have done differently. The background being the main issue for me I think. But you live and learn.

Thanks to Jamie McKelvie and Julia Scheele for suggesting me for the gig.

left with pictures ep update

Posted in illustrations, music, news by tom humberstone on September 21st, 2008

Just a quick post to show off the results of some illustration work I did a few months ago for Left With Pictures‘ EP – Secretly. I can’t help but post the printed outcome as I’m so pleased with everything about it. It has turned out exactly as I hoped, the colours are perfect and I couldn’t be happier with the final product. Big thanks to Organ Grinder Records for making sure the whole thing came together.

Here’s the front and back of the cd in a nice clear sleeve:

And this is how the card corners fold out of the back to reveal two illustrations:

Having designed every facet of this package – here is the cd itself, the inside card design, and the lyrics booklet which are all encased in the two sheets of card that open up:

There we go. Thanks for indulging me.

You can listen to some tracks from the EP at Left With Pictures’ MySpace page. You can also grab hold of one of these beautifully designed CDs from the Organ Grinder website on the 29th September.

left with pictures – secretly ep artwork

Posted in illustrations, music, news by tom humberstone on June 3rd, 2008

Organ Grinder records are releasing the new Left With Pictures EP (titled “Secretly”) in August and here is the artwork I provided for the CD. Very few people I know continue to buy CDs now so I’ve also tried to design an original and interesting package. If it all works well, I’ll post some pictures of the final product here – hopefully it’ll be a nice ‘thing’ that people just want to own. I’m convinced (but may be alone in this) that the success of downloads and torrent sites shouldn’t mean the death of CDs/Vinyl… it just means that the artwork has to try harder to convince the punter to part with their cash. Anyway, here’s the cover of the EP:

The back cover:

The tracklisting:

This is an early image for the cover:

Finally, a poster idea:

Thoughts? Criticism? Unending praise?

illustrated london noise

Posted in appearances, illustrations, music, news, posters by tom humberstone on October 25th, 2007

I will be doing a short half hour DJ set tomorrow (Friday 26th October) at the Illustrated London Noise event – part of the Comica festival. I’ll have an early go at playing other people’s music before leaving it to the professionals. Later in the evening I’ll be sketching people in the bar and giving the results away should people want them. The folks behing Le Gun magazine will also be doing animations and murals throughout. It starts at 8pm and is £4 to get in. Below is the image I drew for the flyer, followed by the final flyer (by the organisers of the event) with all the crucial information I neglected to mention…

broadcast 2000 ep artwork

Posted in illustrations, music, news by tom humberstone on October 11th, 2007

Here’s some artwork I recently finished for the forthcoming debut EP of Broadcast 2000. You can hear his music here and here. The following images constitute the cover, back cover, and tracklisting – although I would imagine this is all rather obvious. The packaging of the cd was also my design – as soon as it’s back from the printers, i’ll post an image of it here.
