oblong magazine title page design

Posted in illustrations, news by tom humberstone on March 13th, 2008

Here’s some hand drawn text I recently produced for the main title page of Oblong magazine’s website. Oblong are a new arts magazine launching this summer.

“OBLONG is a new and strikingly individual quarterly print based arts magazine possessing an anarchic wit and a strong appreciation for the absurd. While rooted in the visual arts, OBLONG traverses the boundaries of science, politics, history and nature. Think of it as a kind of creative menagerie packed with oddball ideas, seductive imagery, informed debate and quirky left-field thinking.”

There’s a second layer of my text underneath that reveals itself when your mouse hovers over key words. Browse my tiny writing and the magazine’s various sections here.

website redesign

Posted in news by tom humberstone on March 10th, 2008

As some of you may have noticed, the Ventedspleen website has had a slight overhaul. When you direct your browser to www.ventedspleen.com, you’ll be greeted by a more intuitive and (hopefully) professional design. I’ll continue to update and use this blog (which has also had a tiny tiny aesthetic reshuffle) but you may need to redirect your bookmarks and RSS subscriptions to www.ventedspleen.com/blog.

Eagle awards news

Thanks to those of you who have been voting for me in the Eagle Awards this year. How to Date a Girl in 10 Days is now available to vote for in the drop down menu for Favourite black and white British comic. Everything You Never Wanted to Know About Crohns Disease can be found in the Favourite web-based comic section.

Whoever’s been nominating me for their Favourite writer (newcomer) and Favourite artist (newcomer) – you’ve warmed my black, withered old heart. The joker who nominated me for the Roll of honour also deserves some sort of prize for making me laugh so much.

Voting closes March 22nd, so if you haven’t voted for me in this glorified popularity contest please do so NOW!

my fellow americans 2008 – catch up

Posted in illustrations, my fellow americans, news by tom humberstone on March 7th, 2008

The seven week roadtrip around the USA following the Presidential primary campaigns is over and it was a great success. Lots of material for my forthcoming graphic novel on the subject and the blog (which I trust you were all reading!) had a lot of support and interest – including favourable mentions in the Guardian Guide, and the Times, Telegraph, and Iain dale blogs.

Here, for your perusal, are the first batch of images I produced for the blog while on the road. More news about the blog and My Fellow Americans related events soon.
