exhibition in aberdeen (oct 26th to nov 11th)

“Tom Humberstone has been producing and publishing comics under the alias of Ventedspleen for three years. Part of the new wave of British small-press cartoonists, his cynical, self-deprecating and vitriolic work has been likened to an English Harvey Pekar. This exhibition presents a rare opportunity to observe the creative process of constructing comic art, from the conception through to the final product. Humberstone’s original pencilled work, preparatory sketches, and early material will be on display in the gallery, with limited screen printed t-shirts and comics available in the shop. See firsthand why this underappreciated medium is deserving of a much wider audience”
I’m currently exhibiting at the Peacock Visual Arts gallery in Aberdeen.
Find out more details at their website here.
Unique screen-printed t-shirts, four badge designs, and new print runs of Art School Scum and How to Date a Girl in 10 Days (with thicker card covers than before) are available in the gallery shop and reception area. Anything that’s left will be available to buy online here and some of the centrally located London comic shops like Orbital and Gosh!
Forbidden Planet International have given the show a very kind write-up on their blog which can be read here, and the prestigious Comics Journal have even given it a small mention in their events calendar here (scroll down to the listings section).

silver lining poster
A poster for a short animated film by Ben Martin. You can watch Silver Lining here.

forbidden planet poster
Illustration for a small university production of Forbidden Planet.

guide to neo-conservatives
Another comic commissioned and written by a staff writer for Bulb magazine. Notable I suppose, for my misguided attempts at adding colour.

guide to the imf
A comic that was commissioned and written by a staff writer for Bulb magazine. I’d been getting a lot of comments about my inking style (or lack of) around this time so I did the whole thing in pencils. With mixed results.

locked in the cellar flyer
Flyer for the Locked in the Cellar night organised by members of Left With Pictures. I ended up spending around five hours drawing ridiculously bad sketches of the bands/audience members which were given away free at the end of the night. If you own one of those sketches - please do the world of art a favour and burn it. Now. Right now.

the fontanelles flyers
Various flyers for a band called The Fontanelles (which is a reference to a baby’s skull I think… I’m not totally sure).
